State Fact: Minnesota was once a vast prairie with miles and miles of grasslands. The original prairies were inhabited for hundreds or possibly thousands of years by the Dakota Native Americans. As the settlers from Europe began to move west they took over the prairies and turned them into farmland for the settlers. Gradually the Dakota's were pushed from their land and unfortunately all that is left of that period are the numerous museums and the historical sites that now pay tribute to these original inhabitants of the region.
