State Fact: Eventually after the United States won its independence it acquired the Louisiana Territory through a purchase in 1798. Mississippi became a state in December of 1817 and it is the 32nd state in actual size of the 50 states of the union.;

State Fact: Mississippi became a region of interest in 1540 when French and Spanish explorers both claimed the area of the present day state of Mississippi. France claimed all of the land of the Mississippi River and its tributaries, which became known as the Louisiana Territory. For many years after there were many battles between the French and Spanish over control of the different sections of the Louisiana Territory. The British also became involved due to their control of the Colonies during this same time period.
